The Southern Gentleman, Southern Proper Hospitality's - the group behind Smokebelly BBQ, the Big Ketch, and Gypsy Kitchen) - latest restaurant, opens for dinner tonight in the Buckhead Atlanta complex. Executive chef Randy Lewis - who was named among Food & Wine magazine's Best New Chefs in 2001 - has composed a Southern-inspired menu focused on locally-sourced produce and meats, but with a few twists. What kinds of twists, you ask? Think chicken and waffles, only with chicken liver mousse and "Nana's chow chow" or the TSG Daily Grind burger with Riverview Farms pork, bacon-mustard green-bourbon jam, Thomasville tomme, and Creole mustard aioli on an H&F Bread Co. bun.
"It’s a gastropub-style menu," Lewis said in a release. "But it won’t be as focused on heavy meats and fried everything. We will be getting seafood from the coast, produce from local farmers and lots of veggie-heavy dishes that will represent tried-and-true flavors in a playful way."
The bar program, led by general manager and beverage director Garron Gore, explores cocktail history while employing Southern flair. Expect barrel-aged cocktails, bottled cocktails, cocktails on tap, and the promise of "the perfect mint julep." TSG's beer list will include mostly craft brews and the wine list will focus on New World styles.
Like sister restaurant Gypsy Kitchen next door, New York-based architecture firm Lacina Heitler designed TSG's interior, which is meant to reflect traditional Southern hospitality with touches like the words "Yes Ma'am" spelled out in tiles at the entrance and seersucker window treatments. There are 25-foot ceilings, dramatic chandeliers, hardwood floors, marble countertops, and vintage tableware.
The Southern Gentleman is located at 3035 Peachtree St. and serves dinner daily, 5-10 p.m.
